Whether you’re just getting started or have been running memberships on Patreon for years, this guide explains what fees you as a creator can expect while using Patreon. Click to expand each section to learn about creator fees on Patreon.

Platform fees

Your platform fee covers the use of Patreon’s membership platform and is a percentage of successfully processed membership payments. We calculate your platform fee based on the payment amount, excluding sales tax. The platform fee percentage depends on your platform plan.

What is the Founders plan?

In May 2019, we introduced new creator plans and fees: Lite at 5%, Pro at 8%, and Premium at 12%. Creators who joined before this date were placed on a discounted Founders-only plan, 5%, that gave them the same features as when they first joined without additional costs.

If you joined Patreon before May, 7 2019, and have not updated your plan or currency since then, you’re on the Founders plan.

Payment processing fees

Payment processing fees cover the cost of using our payment infrastructure. This infrastructure includes recurring billing, recovering declined payments, and fighting fraud.

Processing fees: Lite, Pro, and Premium plans

You can confirm your platform plan from your Settings. If you are on our Lite, Pro, or Premium platform plan, your payment processing fees are applied on a per-pledge basis and depend on the following factors:

  • Your tier price(s): determines whether the standard or micropayment rate is applied
  • Sales tax/VAT: Patreon is required by law to add sales tax/VAT to some patron payments
  • Currency conversion fees (if applicable): we apply a currency conversion fee of 2.5% on the total amount processed (including sales tax) on all patron payments made in a currency other than your payout currency. Read below for more information about currency conversions
  • Your currency: determines what your standard and micropayment rate is. Refer to our Processing rates by Currency table below to find out your standard and micropayment rates

Processing fees: Founders plan

If you joined Patreon before May, 7 2019 and have not updated your plan or currency since then, you’re on the Founders plan. You can confirm whether or not you’re on the Founders plan from your Settings.

As a founding creator, your payment processing fees depend on the following factors:

  • Your tier price: tier amounts can increase or decrease your effective processing rate
  • Sales tax/VAT: Patreon is required by law to add sales tax/VAT to some patron payments
Learn more about sales tax/VAT requirements
  • Currency conversion fees (if applicable): A currency conversion fee of 2.5% on the total amount processed (including sales tax) is applied to all patron payments made in a currency other than your payout currency. Read below for more information about currency conversions
  • Shared patronage: for pledges to multiple creators that are grouped on a single transaction, creators on our founders plan will share the transaction fee, which may result in reduced processing fees for the creators involved
  • A patron’s payment method: determines the processing rate for payments. The founders plan processing rates table below details the

Founders plan processing rates

Our Founders plan is only available to creators who receive payouts in USD. As a creator on our Founders plan, payment processing fees are applied on a per-transaction basis according to the table below:

USD
Patron's payment method Standard payment rate

Credit card, Apple Pay

1.6% + 0.30USD
Paypal or Venmo 2.65% + 0.28USD

How does shared patronage impact my processing rate?

If you are on our Founders plan, you may pay a portion of the standard payment rate rather than all of it. Founders receive aggregation savings on transactions that include pledges to multiple creators.

The amount deducted for payment processing fees for a given month are represented on your Earnings dashboard under the Payment Fees column.

Currency conversion fees

Patreon applies a 2.5% currency conversion fee on all patron payments made in a currency other than your payout currency. This fee will be reversed on any payments that are refunded to patrons. All fees will be reflected in your payout currency. Currency conversion fees and processing fees are both reflected in your Earnings dashboard under the Payment fees column. You can Export data for a breakdown of the currency conversion fee.

You will receive your portion of patron payments in your payout currency based on the average exchange rate from the day before the payment was successfully processed. This calculation is sometimes referred to as a “spot rate.”

Please note that if a patron pays you in your payout currency, then there is no currency conversion fee applied.

Payout fees

Funds in your account balance already reflect the deduction of your platform fee, payment processing fees, and currency conversion fees. Patreon deducts a payout transaction fee when your balance is transferred from your Patreon account.

Your payout fee is not listed in the breakdown of fees within your creator earnings dashboard; however, you may find the payout fee for your payout method and currency of choice in the tables below.

FAQs about fees

Can I get a per-pledge record of my payment fees?

The Patron transaction history CSV, located on your Documents tab, provides a per-transaction record of your patrons’ payments and refunds issued from your account. The patron transaction history includes an itemization of your fees, including; platform fees, payment processing fees, and conversion fees.

Do I have to pay fees when I refund a patron?

There are no additional fees for refunding a patron. When you initiate a refund, you only give back the amount you originally received, and we return any remaining amount retained by Patreon to the patron, including Patreon’s share and any sales tax/VAT.

Does Patreon charge foreign transaction fees?

If a patron pays in a currency that is different from the currency associated with their payment instrument, then the financial institution associated with that payment instrument may charge them a foreign transaction fee for that payment. We are not applying this fee and have no control over it, have no knowledge of whether the fee is applied, and do not receive any of the funds from that fee.

Even if a patron pays in the same currency as the currency associated with their payment instrument, when a patron’s payment is processed in a country different from the one associated with their payment instrument, then the financial institution associated with that payment instrument may charge them a foreign transaction fee for that payment. We are not applying this fee, have no knowledge of whether the fee is applied, and do not receive any of the funds from that fee, but our choices about payment processing may impact or otherwise give rise to this fee.
