Setting audience access for your posts

  • Updated

Setting post access allows you to control exactly which audience your work is reaching. You can set post access when creating a post or edit it once it has been published or drafted.

How to set access to your posts

You can set or edit post access when creating a new post or when editing a published post.

Setting post access when creating a post:

When creating a new post, you can set post access under Who can see this? on the second page of the post creation flow.

Editing post access for published posts:

  1. Click on the Library page from the left menu
  2. Within the Posts tab or Drafts tab, you can:
    • Search for posts by name
    • Sort by Title or Publish date
    • Filter by post type, audience, or tags - click the button to Apply your filter selections
  3. Checkmark the post you want to edit — you can select multiple posts at once
    • To select all posts, click the checkbox at the top. Click it again to unselect all
  4. Once you have your selected posts, click the Edit button
  5. Click Edit access
  6. Use the Who can see this post? menu to select your audience — if you choose selected tiers, you can checkmark multiple tiers or uncheck tiers you want to have access to your posts
  7. Click the Update button to go live with your edits

Post access options

While creating or editing a post, you can set access to as specific of an audience as you’d like. Under Who can see this? you can choose one of the following:

Audience What does it mean?
Public: Anyone can find and consume your public posts - free and paid members and even non-members, whether logged in or logged out.
All members: All free and paid members will be able to view this post. Non-members will see the content with a lock icon and can unlock the content by joining a free or paid membership.
Paid members only:

This option grants access exclusively to all paid members, regardless of their membership tier. This is also true for members who selected choose what you pay, “no tier” path.

Non-members and free members will see this content as locked.

Free members only:

Only free members can access posts with this option selected. Your free members will receive a notification according to their chosen settings, either via push notification or email.

These posts won't show up in your paid members' feeds, and they won't receive any notifications about them. The post will still be visible in the public feed for anyone not a member, with a lock icon.

Selected tiers:

You can select which membership tiers have access. All tiers are preselected by default, so remember to deselect any tiers you want to exclude.

Free members and members who selected a choose what you pay, “no tier” path will see the content with a lock icon and won’t have access to your post unless they update their membership

Why should I post for Selected tiers instead of Paid members only?

Creators can give certain tiers post access while keeping them locked to others. Here is why that can be beneficial to run your membership:

  • It gives you more control over which members find your posts
  • Do you have multiple projects and offer different benefits at the same tier level? You can have multiple tiers at the same price and have the option to provide the content you want. So you can have two $5 tiers offering completely different benefits

Your Audience manager organizes all of your members by their tier — so there's no guesswork about which posts are visible to different members!

Helping members gain access to your posts

If you have members who are in no tier or who are paying more than their tier price, we suggest that you reach out to them to let them know that they may be missing out on certain posts.

How to message members in no tier:

  1. Visit your Audience Manager
  2. Click on the Filters button
  3. Under the Tiers section of the filters, select No tiers
  4. Then click the Apply filters button to get a list of all members who aren’t in a tier
  5. Click the Message button to send a mass note — our suggested messaging can be found below:

Dear member,

I noticed that you created a custom pledge, or “no tier” when you joined my page. As a heads up, I post most of my content for the specific Tiers I offer. If you aren't in a Tier, you might not have access to all of the posts I'd love you to have.

If you’d like access to posts for my [TIER NAME] Tier, you'll want to select that Tier. You can make sure you're in the right Tier by visiting your Memberships, and it will only take a minute.

Checking your Audience manager for members paying more than their tier price:

  1. Visit your Audience Manager
  2. Click on the Filters button
  3. Under the Tiers section of the filters, select a single tier
  4. In the Pledge amount section, set the prices range between your base tier prices and a significantly higher amount (like 100x the amount)
  5. Then, click the Apply filters button to get a list of members who are paying more than that tier price
  6. Click the Message button to check in with these members. Feel free to use our suggested messaging:

Dear member,

I’m messaging you because I noticed that you’re currently pledging a higher amount than the membership Tier you’re signed up for. I post most of my content for my specific Tiers only, so you might not find all of my posts with your current membership.

I want to ensure you access the posts and benefits you intended. You can join my [TIER NAME] Tier by visiting your Memberships — this will only take a minute.
