How do I size images for Patreon posts?

  • Updated

This article will detail Patreon’s recommendations for sizing images so that they display best for your fans.

You can upload images with any dimensions you’d like. We optimize your images for the web and for different devices. What follows are simply our recommendations. Do what works best for your work!

Image sizes and ratios

Below are our recommended image sizes to best display your work on members’ devices. It’s fine if your images are larger than the dimensions listed, but we highly recommend keeping the ratios listed. Keep in mind that we will optimize them for your members’ feeds and devices.

Square Images (1:1 Ratio)

Landscape Images (16:9 Ratio)

Image posts (Post Feed)1500 x 900 px1.67:1
Inline images (Post Feed)1500 x 900 px1.67:1

Keep it consistent

For each of the ratio groupings above, we recommend using the same image size for visual consistency. For example, if you're using a 1:1 ratio for your 'Profile Image,' it would be beneficial to also use a 1:1 ratio for your 'Digital Product Hero Image' and 'Collection Cover Image,' and ideally, maintain a consistent image size like 1024 x 1024 px across all of them.

Exploring ratios

While we recommend sizing your post images (gallery and inline) to 1500 by 900 px, there are some tried and tested ratios that are great for apps and the web. Because you can upload larger format images, we have included a larger version of each ratio – just know that on any screen, it show no wider than ~1080px in the feed.

Resizing by inches rather than pixels

It’s best practice to size your images by pixels if you’re saving for the web, that said, if you prefer saving images by inches, there is an often-used formula for converting from pixels to inches. In order to do this, you’ll need to have the DPI (or resolution) of your image.

Once you know your image DPI, do the following formula: Divide the pixel dimensions by the resolution

Example:

Image TypePixels SizeDPIInches conversion
Image posts (Post Feed)1500 x 900 px7220.83 x 12.5 inches

Safe bets

It's a safe bet to save images between 1500 px and 2500 px wide. Search for "Save for the web" or "Optimize for web" on your image editing software and use that feature.

High-resolution images

We do optimize post images for the web and varying devices. If you are using our Image post option, the optimized version will populate in your post feed. When members click on the image, the image will expand to its original uploaded size

If you want members to have to access a high-resolution file of your images, we recommend uploading your images as an attachment to your posts, especially if you are adding images inline to text posts.

File sizing

Your upload file size is limited to 2 GB per file, while attachments can be up to 5 GB per file. You can attach as many files as you'd like to a single post.
