Creator fees FAQs

This article answers frequently asked questions (FAQs) about the fees creators can expect when offering paid memberships or selling one-time purchases on Patreon.

If you’re looking for a detailed explanation of all the fees that may apply to you, check out our Creator fees overview guide.

  • When you offer paid memberships on Patreon, several types of fees may apply. These can include platform fees, payment processing, payout fees and more – and some may vary based on factors like your plan, your members’ location, payment method or currency.

For a detailed explanation of how each fee works, check out our creator fees overview guide.

Here’s a quick summary of the fees you may see:

    • Platform fee – A percentage of successfully processed payments. This depends on your plan: creators on the standard plan pay 10%, while legacy plan creators may pay 5%, 8% or 11%. You can check which plan you're on in your Account Settings
    • Payment-processing fees – These cover the cost of processing payments from your members. They vary based on your members’ location, currency and payment method
    • App Store fee (iOS purchases) – If a member makes a purchase through Apple’s in-app purchase system within the Patreon iOS app, Apple takes a 30% service fee. This fee replaces Patreon’s standard payment-processing fee for that transaction
    • Currency conversion fee – A 2.5% fee is applied when a member pays in a different currency than your payout currency.
    • Taxes on fees – In some regions, tax must be collected from your members by law. Your payment-processing fee is calculated based on the total payment amount, including any applicable tax. Learn more about sales tax and VAT
    • Payout fee – A small fee for transferring your balance to your selected pay-out method (e.g. PayPal, bank transfer or Payoneer). The fee depends on both the pay-out method and your payout currency.
  • It’s free to list your work for sale on Patreon (e.g. digital goods, posts and collections). We’ll only apply a one-time purchase fee on successfully processed payments at the following rates:

Creator Start Date Fee on One-Time Purchases
    Before 26 May 2025 5%
After 26 May 2025 Between 5% and 12%, depending on your platform plan rate + applicable taxes and payment processing rate

  • You can see a monthly breakdown of fees and taxes applied to your transactions in your Earnings dashboard.

Your Earnings dashboard will default to a view of all your membership payments and Commerce sales combined. Click on the All earnings dropdown and select Shop from the menu to view earnings specific to Commerce, or Membership to view earnings specific to membership payments. Payment-processing fees and taxes on fees will be included under the Payment Fees column.

You can access a record of fees per transaction by going to your Payouts documents tab. From there, you can download the Earnings breakdown by month report. You can also download the paid member transaction history CSV, which provides a per-transaction record of your paid members’ payments and refunds issued from your account.

  • There are no additional fees for refunding. When you initiate a refund, you only give back the amount you originally received, and we return any remaining amount retained by Patreon to the paid member/customer, including Patreon’s share and any sales tax/VAT.

  • If a paid member pays in a currency that is different from the currency associated with their payment instrument, then the financial institution associated with that payment instrument may charge them a foreign transaction fee for that payment. We are not applying this fee and have no control over it, have no knowledge of whether the fee is applied and do not receive any of the funds from that fee.

Even if a paid member pays in the same currency as the currency associated with their payment instrument, when a paid member’s payment is processed in a country different from the one associated with their payment instrument, then the financial institution associated with that payment instrument may charge them a foreign transaction fee for that payment. We are not applying this fee, have no knowledge of whether the fee is applied and do not receive any of the funds from that fee, but our choices about payment processing may impact or otherwise give rise to this fee.

  • In some locations, you may be exempt from paying indirect taxes on fees if you have a registered VAT ID. Visit our Taxes on creator fees article to learn more about where Patreon will apply taxes on fees and how it may affect you.

For information on how to add your VAT ID to your tax form and a list of relevant VAT IDs, please refer to our Help Centre article Providing your VAT ID number.

  • You can see your fees in Earnings Insights, which updates every 4 hours. For a full per-transaction breakdown, download the monthly CSV from the Documents section of your Payouts page.
