At Patreon, we deeply appreciate the talent and creativity our teen users bring to the platform. We aim to provide a space where young creators can confidently express themselves, without compromising their safety and privacy. To achieve this, we are enhancing our tools, policies and processes to prioritise both safety and creative growth. Here are some resources that highlight our commitment to protecting young creatives on Patreon.
Community Guidelines and Terms of Use
We’ve made our Community Guidelines and Terms of Use easily accessible. Young creators on Patreon must be at least 13 years old and have the permission of a parent or guardian. Key points for young creators include:
- Zero tolerance for child exploitation: If you receive unwanted attention, please contact our Trust & Safety team immediately
- Adult content restrictions: Content meant for adults is strictly for users 18 and older. Creators sharing adult content must flag themselves as 18+
Additionally, please review Patreon’s Benefit Guidelines to understand the types of benefits you can offer your members.
Blocking tool
Unwanted interactions can be challenging, especially from members who pay for access to your work. You can block users who exhibit harmful or toxic behaviour. This Help Centre article explains how to block users. You can block a user if they make you uncomfortable, even if their behaviour doesn’t violate our guidelines. The blocking tool is there to help you feel secure on our platform.
How to report harmful or offensive content
You can address harassment and harmful content by submitting a report. This Help Centre article explains how to report offensive content. We work with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in the United States to report illegal behaviour involving users under 18. Additionally, Patreon is part of the Tech Coalition, an alliance of global tech companies who are working together to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse online.
If you’ve experienced harassment or harmful content and need to talk to someone, you can text HOME to 741741 (if based in the US) to chat with a live volunteer Crisis Counsellor at Crisis Text Line. They will listen without judgment, assist you in finding ways to cope and provide you with additional resources that can help.
Advice for parents and guardians
- Don’t share personal information: Advise teens not to share their phone number, home address or school details with strangers.
- Use privacy settings and parental controls: Adjust privacy settings on computers and use DNS services to filter offensive content.
- Monitor device usage: Keep screens and devices in common areas to monitor online behaviour. Use apps to track device activity.
- Check financial statements: Review credit card and phone bills for unfamiliar charges. Consider using prepaid cards for online purchases.
