When creating or editing a post, you can set the access to the following audiences:
- Free access: Visible to anyone who visits your Patreon. Free and paid members get notified when you publish these types of posts.
-
Paid access: Limited to paying members and/or those who purchase the post
- Paid members: All of your paying members
- Selected tiers: Visible to the tiers you select – all of your tiers will be selected by default, and you can deselect which tiers should not have access
- Sell this post: Allow anyone without access to purchase the post
Depending on the audience access you select, more access options will be available for you to choose.
More options (for free access)
Choose who can access your free post. By default, free posts are available to anyone who visits your page. This means they get surfaced more widely across Patreon, making it easier for new fans to discover you. You can also select one of the other settings available:
- Free and paid members: Share work you want your whole Patreon community to enjoy. Giving free members access to some of your exclusive work shows them the value of your paid membership.
- Free members only: Targeting messages just to free members is a great way to encourage them to upgrade. You can share cut-down versions of your work, or resurface older paid posts that were popular to add more value.
- Free members and public visitors: Use this to share something with free members and visitors to your page that you don’t want to notify your paid members about. It’s great for sharing multiple versions of your work or conversion-focused messages.
More options (for paid access)
When you select paid access for your posts, you’ll have additional settings for delivering the post earlier to specific tiers and choosing how the paywall will look.
- Offer early access: Give selected paid tiers exclusive access to this post before making it public
- Paywall display: Choose how the options to unlock appear for fans

Help members access the right posts
Sometimes, members may miss posts because they’re not in the correct tier. Here’s how to help them:
Reaching members in “no tier”
If someone pledges without selecting a tier, they might not see tier-specific posts.
How to message them:
- Visit your Audience Manager
- Click on the Filters button
- Under the Tiers, select No tiers and apply the filter
- Click Message to send a group note – our suggested messaging can be found below:
Dear member,
I noticed that you created a custom pledge, or “no tier”, when you joined my page. As a heads-up, I post most of my content for the specific tiers I offer. If you aren’t in a tier, you might not have access to all of the posts I’d love you to have.
If you’d like access to posts for my [TIER NAME] tier, you’ll want to select that tier. You can make sure you’re in the right tier by visiting your Memberships, and it will only take a minute.
If you need any additional help with this, here’s Patreon’s guide to unlocking posts.
Thanks for your continued support!
Callout note: You can only send private messages to your current and previous paid members.
Identifying members paying above tier price
If a member is paying more than their tier price, they may not be seeing all relevant content.
How to find and message them:
- Visit Audience Manager
- Click Filters
- Under Tiers, select a specific tier
- In the Pledge amount section, set a range that starts at your tier price and goes well above it (e.g. 100x higher)
- Apply the filters
- Click Message and consider using this template:
Dear member,
I’m messaging you because I noticed that you’re currently pledging a higher amount than the membership tier you’re signed up for. I post most of my content for my specific tiers only, so you might not find all of my posts with your current membership.
I want to ensure you access the posts and benefits you intended. You can join my [TIER NAME] tier by visiting your Memberships – this will only take a minute.
