European Union Strong Customer Authentication

  • Updated
For European Union patrons there may be an additional authentication flow when pledging. This is from their bank and will occur when adding a credit or debit card to the account, or pledging to a creator. This is to reduce fraud for card holders and may be required by patrons' banks to comply with the EU’s Payments Services Directive 2.

This additional authentication flow will be a pop-up that presents the patron’s bank’s authentication page. The pop-up may request a username and password, a code sent to email or text, or any other authentication method supported by the bank. Patrons should contact their bank with any questions about fulfilling the authentication requirements, as Patreon does not control the form.

I am a patron. How does it affect me?

If you add a new credit or debit card, or pledge to a new creator, you may encounter a pop-up from your bank that requests extra verification. This could be a username and password, a code sent to email or text, or any other authentication method supported by your bank.

Here's an example of what that pop-up might look like, using a card from the Netherlands:

Please note that if you have any questions or issues with one of these pop-ups, you would have to check with your bank as they are not controlled by Patreon.

I am a creator. Do I need to do anything?

Not at all! Patreon will be implementing this on the platform, so there will be no actions required from creators. Everything will be business as usual for you.

For detailed information on this directive, please review this summary from the European Commission.
