How to set up Two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication provides added security by requiring a 6-digit code generated by a mobile device to be entered anytime that a user logs in. Two-factor authentication allows users to bypass email device verification.

You cannot set up Two-factor authentication via the Patreon app. Please visit the Patreon website to set up Two-factor authentication.

Turn on two-factor authentication for text

Here’s how to set up two-factor authentication for text:

  1. While logged in to your Member profile, click on the Settings button from the left sidebar navigation
  2. Click on the Account tab
  3. Under Two-factor authentication, click on the Use text message
  4. Enter your phone number
  5. We’ll provide you with a set of backup Two-factor recovery codes
    • You can use these codes if you lose your device and cannot receive authentication codes. These codes are exactly like a password, so store them in a very secure place, like a password manager
  6. Enter the code sent to your phone number
  7. Click Continue
  8. You've now set up Two-factor authentication!

Turn on TOTP two-factor authentication

You'll need to set up an authenticator app such as Duo or Google Authenticator for the Time-based One Time Password Two-factor authentication (TOTP).

Here’s how to set up TOTP two-factor authentication for an authenticator app:

  1. While logged in to your Member profile, click on the Settings button from the left sidebar navigation
  2. Click on the Account tab
  3. Under Two-factor authentication, click Use authenticator app 
  4. We’ll provide you with a set of backup Two-factor recovery codes
    • You can use these codes if you lose your device and cannot receive authentication codes. These codes are exactly like a password, so store them in a very secure place, like a password manager
  5. Click Ok
  6. Use your preferred TOTP authenticator app to scan the QR code
  7. Enter the 6-digit code produced by your authenticator app
  8. You've now set up Two-factor authentication!

Now, when you log in to Patreon, you will be prompted to enter a code from your authenticator app or text, adding another layer of security.
