Updates to selling digital products: FAQ

  • Updated
  • Starting July 15, we’re starting to update the digital products editing page to make it easier to sell seamlessly across your Patreon workflows. This will gradually roll out to creators by September.

What’s changing: after the update, you won’t be able to republish or edit pricing and descriptions on any existing or drafts of digital products. To make updates, you’ll need to reupload your product using the new editor.

What’s not changing: this update does not apply for posts or collections you’re already selling. Fans can still buy any products you currently have listed, and you can remove them from your shop at any time.

  • You will see a new editor when you create a new post or digital product. We are gradually rolling this update out and you may have this change effective as early as July 15. All creators will experience this change by the end of September.
  • We’re gradually rolling this change out to all creators by the end of September. You may get this change as soon as July 15.
  • No, we are only updating the editor experience. Your Shops tab is not going away, and anything you sell will still appear on the Shops tab.
  • The new editor introduces several features:

    • Customize your product page: Control how much of your product you show before purchase with new preview tools, richer inline photo and text editors, and if prices show up alongside your membership prices
    • Choose who has access: Easily include your product for some or all of your membership tiers, or have it purchasable for everyone, including non-members
    • Hear directly from fans: After purchasing, fans can leave reactions or comments directly on the product post page
    • Create discounts while publishing a post: As part of the publishing flow, you can add a discount by selecting Run a sale, Offer an early bird discount, or Create a promo code.

We’re also working to bring in more commerce features like early bird pricing, discounts, and limited quantity sales directly into this flow.

  • There is no change to file size limitation with this new editor experience.
    • Your upload file size can be up to 2 GB per file.
    • Attachments can be up to 5 GB per file. You can attach as many files as you’d like to a single post.
  • Fans will still be able to purchase the digital products you have listed, and you can stop selling them at any time. However, digital products created on the previous editor will not be editable or re-published after this experience update.

We recommend publishing any drafts before July 15, or recreating them in the new editor once it’s available to you. If you regularly unpublish and update posts, we suggest recreating them using the post editor to sell. This change only affects digital products — posts and collections for sale are not impacted.

  • If they have previously purchased, they will still be able to access their purchases even if you unpublish. Fans can also still purchase your existing products and can locate any previous purchases within their Purchases tab.
  • Yes, click on the Attachment button in the upper header. Attachments will show up at the bottom of your posts and can be up to 5GB in file size.

  • We are making some improvements to how your product shows up. You can see how it’ll look below.

With this new editor, you can go into paid access options and choose different ways your “buy button” shows up. You can choose to feature it prominently on top or alongside your membership pricing. It's also possible to add a discount to a post directly from the editor by going to the More options below Sell this post and then selecting from three different options: Run a sale, Offer an early bird discount, or Create a promo code.
