Clips (early access)

  • Updated

Grow your membership using Clips. On iOS, we’re launching a feature that suggests clips from a video uploaded onto Patreon. Use these clips to share work with your fans and promote your paid membership on Patreon using Quips.

How it works

Clips automatically turns your Patreon videos into shareable moments, ready to Quip.

  • Open the Clip composer and tap the bottom-right entry point to open the clip library.
  • Browse featured and generated clips, filtering by post; tap a clip to open the viewer and swipe up to see more.
  • Tap “Trim” to adjust start and end points, then “Save”. Tap thumbs down to leave feedback.
  • Tap “Add” to attach the clip to a Quip, add a caption, and share.
  • You can also download a clip to share it off platform.
  • Videos must be Patreon native, at least eight minutes long, and have audio in English to have clip suggestions.
  • You’ll need to be on the latest version of the app to access Clips. If you search Patreon on the app store, it should say “Update”.

To make this workflow easier, after you publish a video post, we’ll send you a push notification once clips are ready. Tap it to jump straight into your Clip library.

FAQ

  • We use AI to generate a transcript from your video and suggest the start and end times of clips. We do not use your content to train AI models. Clips are never published unless you explicitly attach one to a Quip. You can learn more about our CEO Jack Conte’s thoughts on AI here.
  • We have not generated clips from your past videos. All new video posts will have clips generated from them if they exceed the eight-minute minimum duration and have audio in English. If you’d like clips generated from a specific video, please reach out with the post URL.
  • We generate up to eight clips per video. Each video must be over 8 minutes to be eligible for clip generation.
  • Clips were generated for most of my videos, but a few have none. Why? Occasionally, a video won't get suggested clips. Clip suggestions are powered by Google's generative AI, which follows Google's Prohibited Use Policy. If a video's transcript gets flagged under that policy, we aren't able to generate clips for it.
This only affects clip suggestions. Your video itself is untouched, stays live, and works exactly as normal.
  • You are eligible if you have used the iOS app within the last 30 days and have uploaded eligible videos to Patreon (8min+, English audio). If you don’t see the feature, just login to your iOS Patreon app and check back after your next uploaded video.
  • Videos must be at least eight minutes long and have audio in English.
  • This depends on the length of the video. It typically takes up to ten minutes to generate clips after publishing a video post.
  • No. Unless you explicitly attach a clip to a Quip and post it, no one else can see a clip.
  • Check the App Store for an update to the Patreon app.
  • No, just iOS for now. To clarify, you can still upload your long-form video in a post on web as you usually do! It’s just the clips themselves that are iOS only.
  • Just tap the thumbs down button when creating a clip to leave us feedback on the feature.
  • Yes, you can download a clip to share off-platform or you can share it directly to a Quip.
  • Not at this time. If a video has DRM enabled, Clips won't be generated for it. We'll share updates if that changes.
  • Can I turn this off? Yes, please reach out to support if you’d like us to turn this feature off.
