Should my campaign be marked Safe for All Audiences or Adult/18+ and how do I recategorize?

  • Updated

We categorize Patreon campaigns as either “Safe for All Audiences” or “Adult/18+” because the payment processors we rely on to get creators paid require this distinction. This article details the differences between these categories and how to request a category change.

Differences Between Categories

The “Adult/18+” category is for pages with one or more works (audio, text, or visual, including depictions of human beings and animations) containing sexually explicit content and/or nudity. These pages are not searchable on Patreon. To comply with payment processor guidelines, these creators must complete a brief age verification process to ensure they are at least 18 years old.

In contrast, the “Safe for All Audiences” category is for campaigns with no works containing nudity or sexually explicit content. These pages are searchable on Patreon, and these creators do not need to complete the age verification requirement mentioned above.

How to Recategorize

From Safe for All Audiences to Adult/18+

Creators currently categorized as Safe for All Audiences who intend to add one or more works containing sexually explicit content and/or nudity should first follow this process to recategorize as Adult/18+.

  1. Log in to Patreon.com and navigate to your Creator Page Editor
  2. Click into Page settings from the top menu
  3. Scroll to the Adult content section and check the box

From Adult/18+ to Safe for All Audiences

Creators currently categorized as Adult/18+, but whose campaigns contain no sexually explicit content or nudity, may choose to bypass age verification by recategorizing to Safe for All Audiences.

  1. Click here to open a ticket with our support team
  2. Select I have a question about Community Guidelines (English only) from the dropdown
  3. Input the email address associated with your Patreon account
  4. From the General Account Questions dropdown, select My account is incorrectly labeled as Adult Content
  5. Add a Subject line and Description detailing your circumstances, for example:
    • Subject: Recategorizing my page to Safe for All Audiences
    • Description: My page is currently categorized as Adult/18+, but because it has no works containing nudity or sexually explicit content, I would like to recategorize it as Safe for All Audiences
  6. You’ll then hear from a member of the Patreon support team with any next steps.
