Payout guide for creators outside the US

  • Updated

Patreon provides several payout options and supports multiple currencies for creators outside the US. This guide will walk you through each option, the fees involved and how to choose the payout method and currency that best fit your needs.

International payout options

Creators outside the US have the following options available for payouts:

  • Bank transfers (via Payoneer)

    What is a bank transfer?

When you select this payout option, your funds are sent directly to your bank account. How it works depends on whether you’ve set your payout currency to your local currency or to USD. It also depends on what the currency of your intended bank account is.

    Local currency bank transfers

Example: An Australian creator sets their payout currency to AUD.

    • How it works: Patreon sends your funds in your local currency (AUD, GBP, EUR, etc.) straight to your bank account.
    • Fees: A small flat fee (e.g. about $0.50 local equivalent per payout, varies by currency). Minimum payout of $10 or local equivalent.
    • Conversion: No additional currency conversion happens at payout time because Patreon already collects payments in your local currency.
    • Best for: Creators who want predictable, low fees and who have most members paying in the same local currency.

    USD bank transfers (cross currency)

Example: An Australian creator sets USD as their payout currency, even though their bank account is in AUD.

    • How it works: Funds accrue in your Patreon account in USD. When you pay out via USD bank transfer, your funds are automatically converted to your local currency and sent to your bank in your local currency (AUD in this case) minus the fee amount.
    • Fees: 1.55% of payout amount + $0.25 per payout. No additional currency conversion fee is applied. Minimum payout of $10.
    • Conversion: Patreon handles the conversion from USD → local currency before sending to your bank. Because exchange rates change throughout the day, the exact rate applied may vary slightly depending on when your withdrawal is processed in the hours after you initiate it.
    • Best for: Creators who want to stay in USD for member billing but still need their payouts deposited into a local account.

USD bank transfers (USD to USD)

Example: An Australian creator sets USD as their payout currency and also sets the US as their payout country. They’ve set up a USD bank account (via a company like Wise) to accept USD payouts directly.

    • How it works: Patreon sends your funds in USD straight to your USD bank account via an ACH transfer. This option will only appear if you’re an international creator who selects the United States as your bank/payout country.
    • Fees: $0.50 per payout.
    • Conversion: No additional currency conversion happens at payout time, as the transfer is from USD to a USD bank account.
    • Best for: Creators who live outside the US and want to keep their Patreon USD, but prefer to pay out to a US bank account.

Note: You don’t need a Payoneer Wallet account to use direct USD bank transfers.

Why choose a local bank transfer?

    • Lowest-cost option if most of your fans are paying in your local currency.
    • Steady and reliable payouts directly into your bank.

Why choose a USD bank transfer?

    • Best if most of your fans pay in USD. You’ll avoid the 2.5% conversion fee that applies to member payments when your payout currency differs from theirs.
    • Steady and reliable payouts directly into your bank.
    • Keeps your balance in USD. This can be helpful if you want to minimise currency fluctuations or keep your reporting simple.
    • Often cheaper than PayPal or Payoneer Wallet, since you avoid extra conversion or withdrawal fees.

Trade-offs: Local vs USD Bank Transfer

    Local Bank Transfer

    • Lowest payout fees (flat fee, $0.50 or local equivalent).
    • Funds land in your local currency with no extra conversion at payout.
    • If your fans pay in any currency other than your local currency, Patreon applies a 2.5% conversion fee on each member payment.

    USD Bank Transfer

    • Avoids the 2.5% member conversion fee for any fan paying in USD. Any fan paying in non-USD will still see this fee apply.
    • Your funds will still convert into local currency before landing in your bank (conversion built into the payout fee).
    • Higher payout fees (1.55% + $0.25 per payout) if paying out to your local bank account. Equal fees to local transfer if paying out to a USD bank account

    Quick comparison rule of thumb:

    • If most of your members pay in your local currency → choose Local Bank Transfer for the lowest fees overall
    • If most of your members pay in USD → choose USD Bank Transfer to avoid potential member-side conversion costs, even though payout fees may be higher

You can check your fans’ pay-in currency by going to Payouts > Documents and downloading Member Transaction History. You will be able to sort the downloaded CSV by currency.

    More info on changing currency

Switching to your local currency can unlock lower payout fees, but if most of your fans pay in USD, sticking with USD may save you on member-side conversion costs. You can find step-by-step instructions and more information on making this choice in our dedicated article about Setting my creator currency.

FAQ

  • In most cases, we recommend sticking with the currency you’ve already chosen. If you’re deciding for the first time, we recommend selecting the local currency of the country you live in, if supported by Patreon. This makes payouts simpler and usually ensures the lowest payout fees, since it unlocks local bank payout options. If you have a large US fanbase or want to receive payouts to a USD bank account, you may want to choose USD instead. Ultimately, it’s up to you – pick the option that best fits your financial needs.
  • Local bank transfer is only available if you’re set to receive payouts in your country’s local currency and live in a supported country. If your payout currency is set to something different, like USD outside the US, the local transfer option won’t appear. Instead, you’ll see options for USD bank transfer.
  • To get set up, you only need your bank details, such as your account number and the name on the account. No extra paperwork is usually required, and no Payoneer account is required.
  • That’s okay! As long as you live in a country supported by Payoneer, you can still register your bank account, even if it’s located in a different country.
  • First, check whether you’re in the standard five-day payout hold that applies whenever a new payout method is added. If that’s not the case, try re-entering your details. If the issue continues, contact us and we’ll work with our bank partner to get it resolved.
  • Special characters aren’t supported. Please enter your bank information using letters and numbers only. If you’ve already done so, you should be all set.
  • For most creators on Patreon for direct payouts, there’s no payout limit. If you’re using the Payoneer Wallet or PayPal, there may be a payout limit of $20,000 USD. These are set by Payoneer or PayPal, and you can find the details on their website.
