What you can expect after canceling a membership depends on the specific creator’s billing setup. Let’s break down the different cancellation experiences for each of our billing options.
What happens if I….
- Cancel a charge upfront membership
- Cancel a monthly (not charge upfront) membership
- Cancel a per creation membership
- Cancel an annual membership
Canceling a charge upfront membership
You’ll know a creator charges upfront if your payment processing month and “Supported period” match in your Billing History.
What happens after I cancel?
Canceling stops auto-renewal of your membership, and you won’t pay on the upcoming 1st of the month. You’ll have access until the end of the month that you cancel.
Will I get a refund?
Nope — you’ll keep your membership access for the month even after you cancel. You can visit the creator’s Patreon page to confirm that you have access to their posts.
Example
- June 1: Your membership renews, and you pay the creator
- June 15: You cancel your membership
- July 1: At 12 am PT (midnight), your membership ends, and you won’t be billed again
What if I want to rejoin?
If you rejoin in the same month you canceled, we credit the amount you already paid the creator toward your rejoin payment. If you rejoin in a different month, you pay upfront for the new month and on the 1st of each month following.
Canceling a monthly (not charge upfront) membership
If the creator bills monthly, the Supported period will be listed as the month before the processing month on your Billing History. For example, the supported period is May, and the processed date is June 1.
What happens after I cancel?
Your membership ends as soon as you cancel. Since you're back-billed — meaning you paid on the 1st of each month for the previous month's access — your access ends immediately. If you have an outstanding bill (declined) with the creator, we may reattempt your payment even if you cancel.
Example
- June 1: You pay for your May membership access and benefits
- June 15: You cancel your membership
- Your access ends, and you don't pay for the access you had in June
What if I want to rejoin?
There’s no upfront payment required to rejoin, and you unlock access instantly. You can expect to pay on the 1st of the following month.
Canceling a per creation membership
If your membership isn't listed as per month on your Active memberships page, it means that the creator bills per creation. It may be listed as per creation per thing, per comic, per video, etc. Per creation payments will also include the number of posts you paid for under the Supported section of your Billing History.
What happens after I cancel?
Your membership ends as soon as you cancel, and billing for new paid posts stops. You may have one final payment for any paid posts already published that month. Check your Billing History for posted bills on your account before canceling.
Example
- June 1: You pay for paid posts the creator shared in May
- June 2: The creator makes a paid post, which places a pending bill on your Billing History
- June 2 (later in the day): You cancel, and we process the pending bill. Your membership ends once you cancel, and billing stops
What if I want to rejoin?
There’s no payment required to rejoin, and you get instant access to the creator’s Patreon content. Billing for new paid posts resumes from that point forward.
Canceling an annual membership
If your membership is per year on your Active memberships page, it means that you have an annual membership.
What happens after I cancel?
You’ll have access for the remainder of the year term, but your membership won’t renew once the year is over.
Example
- June 10, 2021: You join a creator’s page with an annual membership and pay for the year upfront
- February 2, 2022: You cancel, which stops auto-renewal
- Jun 30, 2022: Your membership ends. You don’t repay July 1st, 2022, and your annual membership doesn’t renew
What if I want to rejoin?
Depending on how soon you rejoin, you can expect one of two scenarios:
- If you cancel and rejoin within the 1st month of your year, you won’t pay any additional membership fee. If you cancel and then upgrade your tier, we'll credit the amount you already paid the creator at checkout, and you’ll pay the remaining cost.
- If you cancel and rejoin a month or more after your initial cancellation, your membership will extend by 1 year. You’ll pay the cost to extend your membership by a year, minus a prorated credit for any remaining months on your original annual payment.
Example
- June 1, 2021: You join a creator’s page on an annual plan and pay $16 (or $1.33/month) upfront for the entire year
- May 2, 2022: You cancel, stopping auto-renewal
- June 3, 2022: You rejoin the same tier during your original year term
- Your term is extended to July 1, 2023
- You pay for the year upfront, minus what’s leftover from your original term
- $16 year - $1.33(1 month leftover) = $14.66
