Everything you need to know about blocking another user

  • Updated

Patreon should be a safe space for all creators to share their work and for all members to celebrate these creations and build community with one another. If you notice someone constantly changing their membership, harassing you or your community, or spamming your posts or community chats, blocking will help.

What a blocked user CAN do What a blocked user CAN NOT do
  • See any existing Direct Message history between you and them
  • Join your Patreon
  • Direct Message you
  • Access any content on your page
  • Engage with your posts or in your community chats

How do I block someone?

Patreon's Community Guidelines outline what is and isn't allowed on Patreon. You can report someone who may not be following these guidelines by clicking the ... (more) button and selecting Report. You can also block them at any time. Use the toggles below to learn how:

  • You can block someone directly from their comment on your posts or quips. This works on the Patreon app:

    1. Click the ... (more) button on the comment
    2. Select Block user
    3. Click the Block button

If the user is a paid member, you'll be asked to select a reason from the list and click the Submit button.

  • You can block someone by going directly to their public profile. This works on both desktop and the Patreon app:
    1. Click or tap the name of the person you'd like to block anywhere you see them
    2. On their public profile, select the ... icon to open a menu
    3. Select Block and confirm your decision
  • You can block paid or free members directly from your Relationship manager on a Desktop:
    1. Click on the Audience button from the left sidebar navigation
    2. In your Relationship manager, locate a specific member by searching for their Patreon username or email address
    3. Click the member's name to expand the member details on the right side of the page
    4. Click More and select Block user

    5. Select the reason why you're blocking the user

    6. Click the Block button to confirm

When you block someone

  • They won't be able to join as a member, access your posts, or interact with you and your community
  • If they're a current member, their membership will be ended
  • If you choose to delete their comments, all their comments will be removed from your posts. If you choose not to delete them, their comments will appear grayed out with a "You blocked [username]" label
  • Their chat messages will appear grayed out and hidden in your chat channels
  • Their direct messages will appear grayed out
  • You won't see their comments or messages anymore, and they won't see yours (except during lives and in chats)

How do I unblock someone?

If you've changed your mind about blocking someone, you can unblock them at any time. Once unblocked, they'll be able to find and interact with your Patreon again, but they'll need to rejoin as a member on their own.

  •

    1. Tap their profile photo or the error message to view the blocked member's profile
    2. Tap the three dots menu to reveal the Unblock option
    3. Tap Unblock to remove the block from this person

If you want to see a full list of people you've blocked, you'll need to use a web browser on a Desktop.

  •
    1. Click on the Audience button from the left sidebar navigation
    2. Click on the Blocked users link from the menubar to find a complete list of blocked members, along with the date you blocked them
    3. Locate the member and click the Unblock button by their name
    4. Confirm your decision to finalize the unblocking process

FAQ

  • As soon as an active member is blocked, they're immediately removed from your community and Relationship manager, and Patreon sends them an email notification of removal. This email lets them know they'll no longer access or receive benefits from your page, that their membership has been canceled, and that they won't be charged again. If you chose to delete their comments during the blocking process, all their comments on your posts will also be removed.
  • If the user isn't an active member, they'll be removed from your Relationship manager but won't receive an email notification.
  • Yes, but only indirectly. If someone tries to follow a link to something you've previously shared with them on Patreon, or if they can't see your posts, messages, or comments, they'll still be able to see the public information on your profile: your page or member name, profile picture, and bio. If you have one, they'll also still have access to your shared direct message history. From these pages, they'll see a notification that says, "This person has blocked you."
  • When you block someone on Patreon, the block applies everywhere. Blocked members won't be able to see your posts or engage with you or your community. They also won't be able to see your comments and messages in other communities.
  • A blocked member or creator can't become a member of your page again unless you unblock them.
  • If you block someone you're a member of, your membership will be removed, and any recurring payments will be canceled. You'll no longer receive messages from them or see their posts and community messages on Patreon.
