Creator fees overview

  • Updated

Whether you’re just getting started or have been running memberships on Patreon for years, this guide explains all the fees you, as a creator, can expect while using Patreon to offer paid memberships or sell digital products as one-time purchases.

If you’re looking to learn more about fees for selling digital products, visit our guide on selling one-time purchases.

Prices will change after August 4, 2025. Existing creators with published pages will not see any increase.

We’re consolidating our pricing to a standard 10% platform plan + applicable taxes and standardizing our payment processing fees for creators who publish a creator page after August 4, 2025. If your creator page is published before or on Monday, August 4th, 2025, your pricing plan will not increase.

You can lock in a legacy pricing plan by publishing your creator page before or on August 4th, 2025. To keep legacy platform pricing, your creator page must remain published after August 4th, 2025 — if you unpublish your page or if Patreon unpublishes your page for any reason, you’ll be subject to Patreon’s new, standard 10% plan + applicable taxes and payment processing fees.

Get the details about this change and what to expect as an existing or new creator by visiting our guide on the upcoming pricing changes.

Platform fees overview

The platform fee covers the use of Patreon’s platform and is a percentage of successfully processed membership and one-time purchases. We calculate your platform fee based on the payment amount, excluding sales tax.

Legacy platform plans

The plans listed below are Patreon’s legacy platform plans. Creators who publish their creator page after August 4th, 2025, will have the standardized 10% pricing + applicable taxes and processing fees applied to their account.

What is the Founders plan?

In May 2019, we introduced new creator plans and fees: Pro at 8%, and Premium at 12%. Creators who joined before this date were placed on a discounted Founders-only plan, 5%, that gave them the same features as when they first joined without additional costs.

If you joined Patreon before May 7, 2019, and have not updated your plan or currency since then, you’re on the Founders plan. If you’ve unpublished your page or Patreon has unpublished your page for any reason, at any point since May 7, 2019, you’ll be subject to Patreon’s current pricing + applicable fees and processing rates upon republishing your page.

Payment processing fees

Payment processing fees cover the cost of using our payment infrastructure. This infrastructure includes:

  • 24/7 fraud monitoring: Fraud gets addressed before it hits your balance, so you never have to worry about it
  • Recovering failed payments: Declined payments get chased down with smart retries and reminders for expired card
  • Streamlined checkout: A simple checkout experience and quick authorization process make it easy for you to earn directly from fans
  • Multiple payment methods: A wide range of payment methods are accepted on Patreon, including PayPal, and major credit cards
  • Trusted payments provider: Patreon continuously meets global certification and compliance standards to help ensure your payments are secure
  • The following payment processing rates apply to all creators who publish their creator page after August 4, 2025. If you published your page by August 4, 2025, and have not unpublished your page or Patreon has not unpublished your page for any reason, review the payment processing rates for legacy platform plans below.

You can confirm your platform plan from your Settings. Payment processing fees are applied on a per-payment basis and depend on the following factors:

    • Sales tax/VAT: Patreon is required by law to add sales tax/VAT to certain payments
    • Currency conversion fees (if applicable): we apply a currency conversion fee of 2.5% on the total amount processed (including sales tax) on all membership payments made in a currency other than your payout currency. Read below for more information about currency conversions
    • Your currency: determines your payment rate. Refer to our Processing rates by Currency table below to find payment rate(s)

You can confirm your platform plan from your Settings. Payment processing fees are applied on a per-payment basis and depend on the following factors:

  • If you joined Patreon before May 7, 2019, and have not updated your plan or currency since then, you’re on the Founders plan. If you’ve unpublish your page or Patreon unpublishes your page for any reason after May 7, 2019, you’ll be subject to Patreon’s pricing plan + applicable taxes at the time that you republish your page. You can confirm whether or not you’re on the Founders plan from your Settings.

As a founding creator, your payment processing fees depend on the following factors:

    • Your tier price: tier amounts can increase or decrease your effective processing rate
    • Sales tax/VAT: Patreon is required by law to add sales tax/VAT to certain payments
Learn more about sales tax/VAT requirements
    • Currency conversion fees (if applicable): A currency conversion fee of 2.5% on the total amount processed (including sales tax) is applied to all membership payments made in a currency other than your payout currency. Read below for more information about currency conversions
    • Shared membership: for payments to multiple creators that are grouped on a single transaction, creators on our Founders plan will share the transaction fee, which may result in reduced processing fees for the creators involved
    • A member’s payment method: determines the processing rate for payments

The Founders plan processing rates table below details the processing rates for the Founders plan.

Creators on the Founders plan can only receive payouts in USD. As a creator on our Founders plan, payment processing fees are applied on a per-transaction basis according to the table below:

    USD
Member's payment method Standard payment rate

    Credit card, Apple Pay

    1.6% + 0.30USD
    Paypal or Venmo 2.65% + 0.28USD

How does shared membership impact my processing rate?

If you are on our Founders plan, you may pay a portion of the standard payment rate rather than all of it. Founders receive aggregation savings on transactions that include memberships to multiple creators.

The amounts deducted for payment processing fees for a given month are represented on your Earnings dashboard under the Payment Fees column.

Creator-to-creator membership payments

When a creator’s Patreon balance is used to cover a membership payment to another creator, Patreon’s payment processing fee is not applied. If a creator’s Patreon balance doesn’t cover the full amount of their membership payment, we’ll charge their payment method, and payment processing fees will apply.

Fees on one-time purchases

It’s free to list your work for sale on Patreon (e.g., digital products, posts, and collections). One-time purchases are subject to the same fees as membership payments:

  • Platform fee: Between 5% and 12% of successfully processed sales + applicable taxes, depending on your platform plan
  • Payment processing fee: Varies by currency (e.g., 2.9% + $0.30 USD) standard payment process rate

Creators who started selling digital products before May 22, 2025, may be on a 5% one-time purchase fee + applicable taxes and payment processing rate.

Learn more about how sales work in our selling one-time purchases guide.

iOS In-App purchase fees

Apple requires that all new sales (digital goods and memberships) made in the Patreon iOS app use their in-app purchase system. As a result, Apple charges a 30% fee on the price of these sales. Patreon does not charge any additional payment processing fees on iOS transactions, but our platform fee still applies.

Important update: On April 30, 2025, a U.S. court ruled in the Epic v. Apple case that Apple is no longer allowed to collect fees on purchases made outside of the App Store. Due to this development, the November 2025 subscription billing transition deadline is now on hold.

This is still a developing situation, but we are moving forward under the assumption that the November 2025 deadline for all Patreon creators to switch to subscription billing is no longer necessary. While additional information may come that alters Apple’s requirements for Patreon’s iOS app, we are optimistic that this ruling will give us additional flexibility in how we support creators on legacy billing models. However, for now, creators still need to be on subscription billing to be able to accept payments through the Patreon iOS app.

For those who still want to proceed with switching to subscription billing, our team is happy to assist with the transition, since it still unlocks access to the latest growth tools on Patreon, like gifting, Autopilot and tier repricing.

Currency conversion fees

Patreon applies a 2.5% currency conversion fee on all membership payments made in a currency other than your payout currency. This fee will be reversed on any payments that are refunded to paid members. All fees will be reflected in your payout currency.

Currency conversion fees and processing fees are both reflected in your Earnings dashboard under the Payment fees column. You can Export data for a breakdown of the currency conversion fee.

You will receive your portion of membership payments in your payout currency based on the average exchange rate from the day before the payment was successfully processed. This calculation is sometimes referred to as a “spot rate.”

Where supported and as applicable, we automatically convert the prices of offerings and memberships into a member’s local currency based on a currency conversion rate that may be determined at our sole discretion. You can learn more about how tiers are converted into other currencies.

Note: If a paid member pays you in your payout currency, then there is no currency conversion fee applied.

Taxes applied to creator fees

Patreon may have sales tax and VAT obligations related to the service fees it charges to its creators, depending on the local tax laws in place in a creator’s jurisdiction.

Where applicable, Patreon may collect VAT/GST/Sales taxes on services provided to creators on a tax-exclusive basis, meaning tax will appear as a separate line item to our fees.

Visit our Taxes on creator fees article to learn more about where Patreon applies taxes on fees and how it may affect you.

Payout transaction fees

Funds in your account balance already reflect the deduction of your platform fee, payment processing fees, and currency conversion fees. Patreon deducts a payout transaction fee when your balance is transferred from your Patreon account.

Your payout fee is not listed in the breakdown of fees within your creator earnings dashboard; however, you may find the payout fee for your payout method and currency of choice in the tables below.
