Creator fees FAQ

  • Updated

This article will address frequently asked questions about fees creators can expect when using Patreon to offer paid memberships, sell posts and collections (early access only), or sell digital products through Commerce. If you're looking for a detailed guide on all creator fees, please visit Creator fees overview.

  • For membership payments, the platform fee percentage depends on your platform plan:

To learn more about each plan and the features they include, visit our pricing page.

  • If you sell products, Patreon will keep 5% of commerce earnings plus fees and applicable taxes. There’s no cost to list products, and you only pay when you start earning. You can check our Commerce fees article for a breakdown of what fees to expect when selling products.

  • This is part of your platform plan for memberships. When you sell a post or collection, a platform fee matching your platform plan (Founder, Pro, Premium) is applied to all successfully processed sales.

    • Founders Plan (5%)
    • Pro Plan (8%)
    • Premium Plan (12%)

You can view which platform plan you’re on within your Creators Settings page and read more about all applicable fees in our Creator fees overview.

  • You can see a monthly breakdown of fees and taxes applied to your transactions in your Earnings dashboard.

Your Earnings dashboard will default to a view of all your membership payments and Commerce sales combined. Click on the All earnings dropdown and select Shop from the menu to view earnings specific to Commerce, or Membership to view earnings specific to membership payments. Payment processing fees and taxes on fees will be included under the Payment Fees column.

You can access a record of fees per transaction by going to your Payouts documents tab. From there, you can download the Earnings breakdown by month report. You can also download the paid member transaction history CSV, which provides a per-transaction record of your paid members’ payments and refunds issued from your account.

  • There are no additional fees for refunding. When you initiate a refund, you only give back the amount you originally received, and we return any remaining amount retained by Patreon to the paid member/customer, including Patreon’s share and any sales tax/VAT.

  • If a paid member pays in a currency that is different from the currency associated with their payment instrument, then the financial institution associated with that payment instrument may charge them a foreign transaction fee for that payment. We are not applying this fee and have no control over it, have no knowledge of whether the fee is applied, and do not receive any of the funds from that fee.

Even if a paid member pays in the same currency as the currency associated with their payment instrument, when a paid member’s payment is processed in a country different from the one associated with their payment instrument, then the financial institution associated with that payment instrument may charge them a foreign transaction fee for that payment. We are not applying this fee, have no knowledge of whether the fee is applied, and do not receive any of the funds from that fee, but our choices about payment processing may impact or otherwise give rise to this fee.

  • In some locations, you may be exempt from paying indirect taxes on fees if you have a registered VAT ID. Visit our Taxes on creator fees article to learn more about where Patreon will apply taxes on fees and how it may affect you.

For information on how to add your VAT ID to your tax form and a list of relevant VAT IDs, please refer to our Help Center article Providing your VAT ID number
