Niches are spaces in the Patreon app where fans and creators post together around a shared interest. To keep them welcoming, every Niche establishes their own Niche rules to set community expectations, in addition to the application of Patreon’s Policies and Community Guidelines. This article explains how those rules work, who reviews reports, and how to report something or block someone in a Niche.
How Niche rules work
Each Niche has its own rules, written by its founding creators and fans. They cover community expectations and etiquette specific to that Niche and their community, so they can be different from one Niche to the next. You’ll find them in the Niche’s details by clicking on the top banner of the Niche, where the name and About details appear.
Before your first post in a Niche, you’ll be asked to read its rules and tap Agree to Niche rules. You need to agree before you can post in that Niche.
Niche rules don’t replace Patreon’s Community Guidelines. Everything in a Niche has to follow both:
| Niche rules | Community Guidelines | |
| Where they apply | Only inside one Niche | Everywhere on Patreon, including Niches |
| Who writes them | Founding creators and fans of the Niche | Patreon |
| Who reviews reports | Patreon team (during the beta) | Patreon Trust & Safety team |
| Examples | • Be Curious, Courteous and Constructive. Foster inclusive and meaningful discussion. • Support and Uplift Original Work. Give credit to creators and their work. |
Harassment, hate speech, spam, illegal content |
How moderation works in Niches
If you find something that violates Niche rules or Patreon’s Guidelines, report it using the steps below. During the beta, the Patreon team moderates Niches and reviews reports about Niche rules. Creators in a Niche take part like everyone else, but they don’t moderate it.
If something breaks a Niche’s rules, the Patreon team may remove the Quip or comment.
Reports about Patreon’s Community Guidelines go to the Trust & Safety team, the same as anywhere else on Patreon.
How to report a Quip or comment
- Tap More on the Quip or comment
- Tap Report
- Choose a reason. If it breaks the Niche’s rules, choose the Niche rules option. For anything else, choose the reason that fits best
- Tap Submit
Once you report a Quip or comment, it’s hidden from your view right away, so you don’t have to keep seeing it while we review it.
How to report a person
If someone’s behavior in a Niche is a problem, rather than one Quip or comment, you can report their profile:
- Tap their name or profile picture to open their profile
- Tap More
- Tap Report and choose a reason
To learn more about reporting anywhere on Patreon, read our article on reporting content that violates Community Guidelines.
What happens after you report
Here’s what to expect:
- The Quip or comment is hidden for you right away
- Reports about Niche rules are reviewed by the Patreon team, and reports about Community Guidelines by the Trust & Safety team
- If the report is confirmed, the Quip or comment may be removed from the Niche
- The person you reported isn’t told who reported them
How to block someone in a Niche
Blocking someone limits how you and that person can interact, in both directions, including in Niches. You can block someone from their profile or from the More [3-dot icon] menu on their Quip or comment. For the full steps and what blocking does, read everything you need to know about blocking another user.
If you’re in the same Niche as someone you’ve blocked, you’ll still both be in it, but you won’t be able to interact with each other.
FAQ
Can creators remove Quips or comments in a Niche?
Not during the beta. Creators take part in Niches like everyone else, and the Patreon team handles moderation. Creators can report anything that breaks the rules.
What if something breaks both the Niche rules and the Community Guidelines?
Choose the reason that fits best. If it’s harmful, like harassment, hate speech, or threats, choose the Community Guidelines reason so the Trust & Safety team reviews it.
Why can’t I post in a Niche?
Make sure you’ve verified your email address and agreed to the Niche’s rules. If you still can’t post, the Niche may be paused for new Quips for a while.
What if someone is in danger?
If you believe someone is in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services first, then report the Quip, comment, or profile on Patreon.
