Niches for members Early Access

  • Updated

Niches are community spaces in the Patreon app built around a shared interest, where fans and creators post together. Each Niche has its own feed of Quips, its own rules, and a community of people who care about the same thing you do. No single creator owns a Niche, so it’s about the interest, not one page.

Niches are in early access and available only in the Patreon app for iOS and Android. We’re starting with a small number of Niches and plan to add more over time.

What you can do in a Niche

Once you join a Niche, you can:

  • Post Quips, short posts with text, images, or short videos
  • Reply to prompts, the questions pinned at the top of a Niche to get conversations going
  • Comment on Quips, including with images
  • Like Quips, requip them with your own comment, or share them with the Niche
  • Invite others with the Niche’s link or QR code

Everyone in a Niche can post, creators and fans alike.

How to join a Niche

Right now, you can join a Niche with an invite link or QR code shared by someone who’s already in it. You’ll need a Patreon account and the Patreon app.

  1. Open the invite link or scan the QR code
  2. Tap Join community
  3. Log in to your Patreon account, or sign up if you don’t have one yet
  4. The Niche opens in the Patreon app

If you open an invite link on a computer, scan the QR code with your phone to continue in the app.

How to find your Niches in the app

After you join, your Niches appear in 2 places:

  • At the top of your Home screen
  • In the Niches section of the menu

Tap a Niche to open the community space. The newest Quips appear first, with any pinned prompts at the top. For more on the Home screen, read our guide to navigating the Patreon app as a member.

How to post in a Niche

Before you can post or comment, you’ll need to verify your email address. The first time you post in a Niche, you’ll also be asked to agree to its rules.

  1. Open the Niche
  2. Tap Create Quip
  3. Add your text, images, or short video
  4. Choose whether anyone can comment or no one can comment
  5. Tap Publish

If it’s your first post in that Niche, read the Niche rules and tap Agree to Niche rules. If you close the rules without agreeing, they’ll appear again the next time you post.

To answer a prompt, open the prompt and post your reply as a Quip. Scheduling and drafts aren’t available for Niche Quips yet.

Where your Niche Quips appear

Quips you post in a Niche appear in that Niche’s feed. They can also show up in the Home feed of other people in the same Niche. Quips from Niches you’re in can appear in your Home feed too.

If you’re a creator, the Quips you post in a Niche also appear in the Quips tab of your Patreon page.

How Niche rules work

Each Niche has its own rules, written by its founding creators and fans with Patreon. They cover things specific to that Niche, like spoilers or self-promotion. You’ll find them in the Niche’s details.

Niche rules are different from Patreon’s Community Guidelines:

  • Niche rules apply only inside that Niche. During early access, the Patreon Community team reviews reports about them
  • Community Guidelines apply everywhere on Patreon, including Niches. The Trust & Safety team reviews reports about them

How to report or block someone in a Niche

If something in a Niche violates community guidelines or the Niche rules, you can report it:

  1. Tap More on the Quip or comment
  2. Tap Report
  3. Choose a reason. To report something that breaks the Niche’s rules, choose the Niche rules option
  4. Tap Submit

Once you report a Quip or comment, it’s hidden from your view right away. You can also report a person’s profile. To learn more, read our article on reporting content that violates Community Guidelines.

You can also block someone. Blocking limits how you and that person can interact, in both directions. Read everything you need to know about blocking another user.

How to leave a Niche

You can leave a Niche at any time.

  1. Open the Niche
  2. Tap More
  3. Tap Leave

After you leave, that Niche’s Quips stop appearing in your Home feed. You can rejoin later with an invite link.

If you were added to the Niche automatically, we won’t add you back to it again, even if you join another creator who’s part of it.

FAQ

Is it free to join a Niche?

Yes. Being in a Niche is free and separate from your memberships. Nothing about what you pay or what you get from a creator changes.

Do I need to be a member of a creator to join a Niche?

No. Anyone with a Patreon account can join a Niche with an invite link, whether or not they’re a member of the creators in it.

Why was I added to a Niche?

If you’re a free or paid member of a creator who’s part of a Niche, you may be added to that Niche automatically. The next time you open the Patreon app, you’ll see a welcome screen that explains why you were added. Being in a Niche is free and doesn’t change your membership, what you pay, or what you get from the creator. If you’d rather not be in the Niche, you can leave at any time.

Can I use Niches on desktop?

Not yet. Niches are available only in the Patreon app for iOS and Android. Invite links open in any browser, but you’ll need the app to join and post.

How do I find more Niches?

There isn’t a way to browse or search for Niches yet. For now, you can join with an invite link from someone who’s already in a Niche.

Can I create my own Niche?

Not yet. Right now, Patreon creates Niches with a small group of founding creators and fans. If there’s a Niche you’d like to see, suggest a new Niche.

Can I invite other people to a Niche?

Yes. Share the Niche’s invite link or QR code. There is a share icon at the top right of the Niche. Invite links don’t expire, and anyone with a Patreon account can use them.

Why can’t I post or comment in a Niche?

Make sure you’ve verified your email address and agreed to the Niche’s rules. If you still can’t post, the Niche may be temporarily paused for new Quips. You can still comment while a Niche is paused. Additionally, if you have a creator page, your page must be published in order to post.

Are Niches available in my language?

Not yet. Niches are available in English for now.

I’m a fan on Android and unable to participate in a Niche. Why?

If you have a creator page you started and never published, you’ll need to publish it to fully participate in a Niche on Android. This can happen if you accidentally started a creator page.
